With the anniversary of the first world war approaching this is a
tribute to the Ulster 36th Division and the 16th Irish who fought side by side after the battle of the Somme. The Ulster 36 Division was the only regiment to reach their objective at the Somme only to be slaughtered due to bad communication and lack of support.
After I wrote this song I visited the Flanders Fields Museum.
When you enter the museum you receive a card from a machine
and you become a person from the first world war. It can be male, female, soldier, civilian, nurse, doctor, labourer etc and from many different nationalities. As you pass through you enter the card in different exhibitions and you follow their journey through the war at the end it tells you if they survived it. There are a million cards or so and I became William Redmand the brother of John Redmand who founded the 36th regiment. I could not believe it and have the card to this day.
When I received the card with his name on it my friend could not believe it. A big coincidence some would say I just like to think he liked the song.
